Recently, WBC filed a brief opposing same-sex marriage in Kansas, as you would pretty much expect. Supposedly the brief tones down the actual language, but their sentiment remains the same: God hates fags. And there are definitely parallels that I am seeing with Gamergate as WBC becomes the most visible face of marriage equality opponents.
In both cases, the most hateful group becomes the most easily recognized. When you're throwing around insults, trying to offend as many people as possible, you're going to get the most attention. But the only way they differ from the rest of marriage opponents is how far they're willing to go. I doubt that most opponents of marriage equality view themselves as "hateful". They're threatened at losing the status quo, because the status quo has always favored them, and they don't stand to lose any rights themselves. They're just scared, and that leads them to make poor decisions and use language that is tone-deaf at best. Most people intentions are honorable, if selfish, and I think there is probably a significant portion of Gamergaters who truly have been sucked into the false narrative about ethics in game journalism, because they're so uncomfortable with feminist rhetoric.
What I told my dad when we first talked about the Washington Redskins (my favorite NFL team) is that just because people recognize that something you have enjoyed is racist, it doesn't necessarily make YOU racist. I do not apologize for all my years watching the Redskins. However, their name is racist, and something should be changed. You only step into that territory when you blindly defend it, because you're scared of changing something that has been a certain way for a long period of time. When Anita Sarkeesian criticizes the male-centric tropes in gaming, she's not saying "destroy all games." She's also not calling for all games to be as experimental in nature as Depression Quest, which was clearly never meant to be sold next to Destiny. She's just saying "we can do better." And we can.
But by continuing to dwell in the same camp as the most hateful of them (the ones who call feminists sociopaths or send rape and death threats) they only drag themselves down further. It's okay to be uncomfortable when things are changing, and yeah, the focus is being taken off of you ever so slightly, to acknowledge that there are others who have beliefs. If you want to call it cultural Marxism, you can. But it's also called progress.
